A Painting to Honour the Values of Firefighters: Thank You, Michel Barjolin
With heartfelt gratitude, the Association of Friends of the Firefighters’ Museum of La Réunion and the Indian Ocean wishes to pay tribute to Michel Barjolin for his generous donation of a painting rich in meaning and symbolism.
An Inspiring Journey, an Unwavering Commitment
Michel Barjolin, a former soldier and honorary lieutenant of the prestigious 2nd Parachute Regiment of the Marine Infantry (2e RPIMa), has long stood out for his dedication to promoting the values of courage, solidarity, and public service. He continues this mission today through his involvement in the regimental heritage room, helping to preserve and pass on its memory.
But his commitment goes even further. As a former agrégé teacher of physical education at Saint-Charles College in Saint-Pierre, Michel left a lasting mark on generations of young Réunionnais — not only through his teaching, but also as a mentor and role model.
An Artist in Service of Universal Values
Now retired, Michel devotes much of his time to his passions: painting and writing. His art, deeply emotional and message-driven, reflects the human values that have guided him throughout his life. The painting he has donated to our association perfectly embodies this spirit — a powerful depiction of firefighters in action, a tribute to their bravery and selflessness.

A Gift that Enriches Our Future Museum
This painting will take its rightful place in our museum, adding a universal and deeply moving dimension to our project. Created with remarkable sensitivity, the work pays tribute to the New York firefighters, heroes of 9/11, whose courage and sacrifice became a symbol of global resilience.
The scene captures a moment of tension: a group of firefighters advancing with determination through a dark, flame-engulfed landscape. Warm colours — dominated by vivid reds and oranges — evoke the heat of the fire, while dark tones and shadows underscore the gravity of the moment. The blue of the firefighters’ uniforms stands out with strength, symbolising their role as pillars of courage and protection in a hostile environment.
The detailed expressions and stances of the figures reflect both heroism and humanity. Thick smoke amplifies the sense of imminent danger, but also the hope carried by collective action.
This painting does more than depict an emergency scene — it honours all firefighters, from La Réunion and around the world. It will remind visitors of the shared values that unite firefighters globally: bravery in the face of danger, solidarity in hardship, and a steadfast commitment to serving others. By exhibiting this work, we hope to spark emotion, reflection, and, above all, genuine admiration for the men and women who embody dedication and resilience every day.
We extend our sincere thanks to Michel Barjolin for his generosity and outstanding contribution to our association’s mission. This meaningful donation reflects his deep attachment to the values of courage and transmission that we hold dear. Through this gesture, he helps to immortalise these ideals and pass them on to future generations, inscribing both his art and his commitment into the living legacy of our museum.
An Ongoing Source of Inspiration
Beyond his artistic gifts, Michel remains actively involved with young people, continuing to share his knowledge and experience with the same energy as ever. His example is a true source of inspiration — a reminder that the values of courage and transmission never truly retire.
We are proud to count on the support of such a dedicated and talented individual. Michel, your gesture marks a milestone in our project. Thank you again for your invaluable contribution!
