On Wednesday 29 April 2026, two representatives of the Association of Friends of the Firefighters\u2019 Museum of R\u00e9union Island and the Indian Ocean attended a conference held at UCO La R\u00e9union on the theme: \u201cWTC 911 \u2013 Infernal Structures. At the Heart of the American Sanctuary.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference was led by Michel Barjolin<\/strong>, an agr\u00e9g\u00e9 teacher and author of a book about the attacks of 11 September 2001. It offered a historical, technical and human approach to the collapse of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding an event that became a world landmark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

11 September 2001 remains a major event in contemporary history. Beyond its geopolitical impact, it is also a central moment in the history of modern rescue services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For firefighters, this disaster reminds us of the extreme complexity of some operations: the initial uncertainty, the massive commitment of rescue services, the collapse of structures, the coordination of resources, the long-term exposure of responders, and the memory of both victims and rescuers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michel Barjolin\u2019s conference addressed these issues by looking back at the technical, technological and human causes that led to the collapse of the towers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field experience shared with the audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the discussion, the association\u2019s representatives were able to ask questions and share their experience of the firefighter profession with the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This contribution helped build a link between the historical analysis of the event and the concrete reality of rescue work: the reality of women and men who intervene when a situation goes beyond usual frameworks, when uncertainty dominates, and when every decision may affect lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This perspective fully matches the mission of the association: not only to preserve memory, but also to pass on what this memory tells us about the profession, its demands and its values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A highly symbolic donation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the conference, Michel Barjolin gave our association an American flag bearing the names of the victims of the attacks of 11 September 2001<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gesture gives this meeting a special meaning. This flag now joins the objects entrusted to the association for the purposes of memory and transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not simply a souvenir. It is a memorial object. It reminds us that the history of firefighters goes beyond borders. Everywhere, rescue services share the same exposure to risk, the same demand for commitment, and the same responsibility towards victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A memory to pass on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The future Firefighters\u2019 Museum of R\u00e9union Island and the Indian Ocean aims to preserve both the material and immaterial traces of rescue work. This mission concerns local history, but it is also part of a broader memory: the memory of disasters, collective commitment and solidarity between rescue services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association\u2019s participation in this conference, the exchanges with the public and the donation of this flag therefore form a significant moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They remind us that preserving firefighters\u2019 heritage is not only about keeping vehicles, helmets, uniforms or archives. It is also about keeping alive the meaning of commitment, courage and service carried by those who intervene when everything collapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
