Christian Mercier, 38 years serving fire and sea
After thirty-eight years serving the population, Chief Warrant Officer Christian Mercier has closed a chapter marked by commitment, passion, and transmission.
His career began in 1987 with the Paris Fire Brigade, where he served for five years. He then joined the SDIS of La Réunion: eight years in Saint-Denis, followed by twenty-five years at the Saint-Leu fire and rescue station, where he completed his career.
A specialist in the nautical field, he made diving much more than a function — it became a vocation. His skills led him to take part in major external operations, including three air crashes, one of them involving a long-haul flight hijacked during a terrorist act. Some of these missions took him down to 60 metres, in extreme conditions.
While he remembers the most hazardous interventions, Christian Mercier insists above all on the importance of transmission. He trained and supported many young divers, finding in teaching both pride and mutual enrichment. His commitment also extended to the Young Firefighters, whom he supervised consistently, and to the social life of the fire service, convinced that the spirit of the corps is also built through camaraderie and solidarity.
Operational until the very end, he kept direct contact with the field and with interventions, showing his deep attachment to the firefighter’s mission.
Today, he retires with a strong sense of duty fulfilled: commitment, loyalty, and passion. His career reflects the richness of those who, in Paris as in La Réunion, dedicate their lives to protecting others and passing on their knowledge.
